A journey through the German lands crosses very different landscapes. In the north lie the North Sea and Baltic coasts, islands and low-lying areas. Farther inland, the North German Plain gives way to the Central Uplands, including the Harz and other hill and mountain areas. Farther south are varied hills, valleys and the Alpine foothills; the Alps form part of the southern border region.

This is a broad north-to-south pattern, not a rule that every northern place is flat or every southern place is mountainous. The landscape also changes from west to east. A general description helps you orient yourself, but a more detailed map is needed for a particular town or route.

A broad landscape guide
Area	Examples of features	Useful question
Northern coasts and plain	Seas, ports, islands, heath and lowlands	How did people connect a place to trade routes?
Central Uplands	Hills, forests and ranges such as the Harz	How did communities use and travel through this terrain?
Southern regions	Varied hills and valleys, Alpine foothills and mountains	How did local work and settlement change over time?

Worked example: a port is more than a coastline

A coast can make sea trade possible. But a successful trading port also depends on people building facilities, establishing connections, making rules and investing resources. Geography provides opportunities and constraints; it does not explain every economic or political outcome by itself.

Apply the same distinction to photographs. A coastal image can support a statement about the visible shore. An Alpine image can show steep terrain. Neither proves that everyone in those areas has the same occupation, beliefs or personality. To investigate those questions, you would need different evidence.

Observation or explanation? “This place is near the sea” describes location. “Its trade developed through shipping networks and investment” proposes a historical explanation that needs evidence.

Pause before the checks: trace the broad north-to-south route in your own words, then name one thing a landscape image cannot tell you about the people who live there.
